Founded by Harry Ford Sinclair in 1916, Sinclair Oil & Refining Company couldn’t have begun at a better time in history. With a borrowed $20 million dollars Sinclair began what midwestern salesman called a “country boy operation.” Harry Sinclair started with no organization, no technological skills and little administrative education yet increased its assets by 40 percent to $70 million in its first 14 months. This was just the beginning. Sinclair Oil had a major impact in the industry which include being the first high-octane gasoline, the first racing promotions and the first modern service station.
